Great Red Ribbon Week!

Thanks so much for a memorable Red Ribbon Week at the FGC.  Each day's theme was fun for students and staff alike.  Everything from our Dream of a Drug Free World to our Mix It Up Day at lunch (talking about healthy decision making and habits) to our awesome glow in the dark YOLO bracelets.  We especially had fun with our "Say Boo to Drugs Day".  Here are a few of my favorite photographs from the week.

Red Ribbon Week

This week, we were lucky enough to have a special assembly featuring Mr. Mike Claiborne and Fredbird from the St. Louis Cardinals.  This assembly was a kick off to our Red Ribbon Week which begins on Monday October 24th.  The assembly had three main messages: "Stay in School, Say No to Drugs, and Be Active".  The assembly was very informative for the kids and very entertaining for both students and staff.

This Year's National Theme for Red Ribbon Week is "YOLO-You Only Live Once".  In addition to having our assembly, guidance lessons, and morning announcements regarding healthy decisions and saying no to drugs, we are also having a spirit week (please see schedule below and some photos from our assembly).

Our Schedule for Red Ribbon Week:

Monday October 24th Red Ribbon Spirit Day (Wear Red)

Tuesday October 25th Don't Get Mixed Up in Drugs (Wear Mis-Matched Clothing of Different Colors/Seasons, etc.). This will connect with our "Mix It Up Day at Lunch."

Wednesday October 26th Be on a Drug Free Team (Wear Your Favorite Sports Team Shirt/Jersey).

Thursday October 27th Dream of a Drug Free World (Pajama Day)

Friday October 28th No School (Conference Compensation Day)

Monday October 31st Say "Boo" to Drugs (Wear a School Appropriate Costumes or Halloween Themed T-Shirts).

National Day of Character

Today is National Character Day...an initiative to develop character strengths such as empathy, courage, responsibility, kindness and more. Scientists agree that character strengths can be learned, practiced, and cultivated for use at home, school, and in the community.  What character strengths do you have? What are character strengths that you admire in others?  When thinking about your character you should ask yourself, “Is what I am doing a reflection of who I am and what I want to be”? Remember...the true test of character isn’t how you are on your best days, but how you act on your worst ones.  Show your character Dragons!!

Open Lunch

Today we held our first weekly Open Lunch with the Counselor.  Any student is welcome to attend (8 per lunch period).  Today we began with our question of the day and the kids voted between the "Would You Rather" game vs. Dart Board Competition.  It is a fun way for me to get to know our students better and for our students to get to know each other better in a relaxed and fun environment. Open Lunches will be held every Monday throughout the school year.  Open Lunches are always a highlight for me and a great way to start off a new school week.  Happy Monday!

First Day of Fifth!!

What a great first day we had at the Fifth Grade Center.  We also had our first day of ROARS Week (starting with Respectful) and these kiddos did a fantastic job.  So many smiling faces today.  It is going to be a wonderful year at the FGC!

May in Review

It is so hard to believe the last day of school is here.  The entire year went by so quickly (as it always does), however the month of May in particular has been packed with fun events and activities for our soon to be middle school students.  Earlier this month we hosted fourth graders from each of the elementary buildings for "Field Trip to the Fifth".  We also hosted our last Career Cafe of the year, had a successful Fill the Barrel drive for Operation Food Search, a fun tug of war competition with our students and ended the fun today with a "Summer Send Off" to remember.  A dance party, Nine Square in the Air, a Dunk Tank, Bubble Bus, Kona Shaved Ice Truck, basketball,  tennis, soccer, kickball games and other field activities as well as a photo booth made the day memorable for all. We will miss this incredible group of students and parents and hope that you will come and visit us next year.  Happy Summer and thanks for a lovely year!  (Students...remember to keep your "growth mindset" as you transition to LMS in August).  Love, Ms. Amy

Fill the Bus-Results!!!!

Wow, thanks to our hard working and generous FGC families, we have some great news to share. The totals are in and as a school we have collected 995 food items (7 1/2 barrels) for Operation Food Search.  In addition, we also had $110 donated in cash.  All together, that equals more than 1,000 food items for St. Louis families in need this summer.  Thanks for your enthusiasm and dedication to Fill the Barrel for Operation Food Search 2016!!!

The team with the most number of items/donations was.....Team Water with 367.  Team Earth was very close behind with 349.  District totals will be coming in soon.  A big thank you to our Character Council students for running our building effort and the District Character Education Committee for sponsoring this yearly event.

Fill the Barrel Begins Today!!

From now, through May 11th the FGC will be collecting food for Operation Food Search.  Most wanted items included canned meat, canned pasta, soup, chili, canned vegetables, pancake mix and cereal (please do not send in glass containers or ramen noodles).  Team Air, Earth, Fire and Water decided to have a competition to see which team could bring in the most items.  Also, Friday is wear a Cap for a Cause Day. Students who donate a can of food can wear a hat all day.  The FGC is hoping to fill 8 barrels of food (each barrel holds 175 pounds).  Let's fill those barrels FGC!!!

Open Lunch

Most every Tuesday at the FGC means "Open Lunch" with the counselor.  Fifth graders that want to come have lunch with the counselor decide between playing a game of "Would You Rather" or a Dartboard Competition (magnetic darts).  Whatever the students decide, it is always great to have this time with them each week in a fun and relaxed setting.

Career Cafe Continues

We have had an exciting few months at the FGC.  Many more speakers have come to share their knowledge and expertise of their occupation with our students.  Here are a few pictures from the last few Career Cafe Lunch Sessions.  Since Spring Break we have hosted a political consultant, a research scientist, a CEO, a writer/publisher, a heart surgeon,  and a middle school principal.  We only have one session left before the end of the school year.  A huge thank you to all of our amazing speakers!
